Understanding Common Hiking Injuries

  • Sprained Ankles - Often caused by uneven terrain or missteps, ankle sprains can range from mild to severe, impacting your ability to walk comfortably.

  • Knee Pain - The repetitive motion of hiking can strain the knee joint and surrounding tendons, leading to pain and discomfort, especially on descents.It is important to have strong thigh and glute muscles to help to protect your knees.

  • Muscle Strains - Overexertion or too much too soon can result in strains in the muscles of the legs, back, or shoulders. Achillies tendinopathies, calf strains and quad strains are all common injuries from hiking 

  • Back pain - Carrying a heavy backpack can also cause issues if you are not used to it and it is not fitted correctly . 

  • Blisters - Friction from ill-fitting footwear or excessive moisture can cause painful blisters, affecting your ability to continue hiking.

Preventive Measures

  • Proper Warm-Up - Engage in dynamic stretching and warm-up exercises before hitting the trail to prepare your muscles and joints for activity.

  • Strength training - adequate strength training before you start hiking will help to prevent injuries and falls as it improves balance and muscle strength.  

  • Gradual Progression - Increase the intensity and duration of your hikes gradually to avoid overloading your body.   

  • Footwear and Gear - Invest in supportive footwear with good traction and consider using trekking poles to reduce strain on your joints going down hill. 

  • Listen to Your Body - Pay attention to any signs of discomfort or fatigue during your hike and take breaks as needed to prevent overuse injuries.

Post-Hike Recovery

Rest and Ice; Allow your body adequate time to rest and use ice packs to reduce inflammation and pain if you have any areas that are particularly painful  If you do pick up any injuries hiking it is important to get assessed by your physio to rehab you back to strength again.
