Male sexual dysfunction is more common than many people realise. What many men don’t know is that physiotherapy can play an important role in improving these problems by focusing on how the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles work.

Why the Pelvic Floor Matters

At the base of the pelvis sits a group of muscles called the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles help with:

  • Getting and keeping an erection

  • Controlling ejaculation

  • Supporting blood flow to the penis

  • Relaxing and reducing pain in the pelvic area

When these muscles are weak, tight, or not working properly, sexual function can suffer.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Pelvic-floor–focused physiotherapy can help many men:

  • Improve erections

  • Last longer during sex

  • Reduce pain in the pelvic area

  • Gain better confidence and control

It’s a safe, non-invasive, and natural treatment option, often used alongside medical treatments if needed.

What to Expect During Treatment

During your sessions, your physiotherapist will first complete a thorough assessment to understand how your pelvic floor is functioning. Treatment may include tailored exercises, biofeedback to help you engage the right muscles, hands-on techniques to relax tight areas, and advice on posture and lifestyle habits that influence sexual function.
Most men begin to notice improvements within a few weeks, especially when they stay consistent with their home program.

After Prostatectomy

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect after prostatectomy. While a strong pelvic floor is important, many men also need a course of therapy to maintain the health of penile tissues during recovery. This can support the return of sexual function and improve long-term outcomes.
