Neck pain is a common and sometimes disabling problem that will affect many people during their lifetime. Many factors can contribute to the development of neck pain. Sometimes it can develop as the result of a trauma such as a car accident. Whiplash Associated Disorder usually occurs when a car is rear-ended and the head is suddenly thrown forward and back in quick succession. If pain is severe you may need to talk to your doctor about anti-inflammatory medication. Neck pain can also happen with other sudden head movements.Commonly people present with neck pain following a sudden lifting or twisting injury. We also see people presenting with neck pain where we feel work postures contribute to pain.

Neck Pain Assessment

Chartered Physiotherapists will carry out an in-depth assessment in order to have an accurate diagnosis. We use a variety of techniques in the treatment of neck pain. Research has shown that in people with neck pain muscle activity changes around the neck. Some muscles start working too hard and some don’t do enough work. Treatment will often focus on exercises to restore the muscle balance. Muscles of the neck, shoulder and upper back can all be affected by neck pain and therefore exercises targeting this area will be prescribed.

Posture

Posture is really important in the management of neck pain. Sitting at a desk with poor posture may increase the strain on the joints and soft tissues of the neck. Your Chartered Physiotherapist can advise you on the best way to sit at your desk and how to set your desk up to ease pressure on the joints and muscles of the neck. Alternating your work tasks and getting up regularly from your desk can also help relieve neck pain.

Stiffness

Limited movement is a common problem in those with neck pain. Patients often describe pain and stiffness looking over their shoulder or looking up. This can cause difficulty with tasks like reversing the car or hanging washing on the line. At our Dublin 4 clinic, all our physiotherapists have extensive training and experience in manual therapy. Specific techniques such as including manipulation and a variety of mobilisations can be carried by your physiotherapist with the aim of restoring full movement to the neck. Many things can contribute to the development of neck pain. In most cases neck pain is short-lived and the problem does not become chronic. The experts at Ballsbridge Physiotherapy can work with you to relieve pain and restore movement to your injured neck.
